Clip-On Connecting Link
The clip-on style uses a spring clip (also called a circlip) to secure the side plate in place. It can be installed and removed using basic hand tools, making it a convenient option for riders who frequently swap sprockets or need to pull the chain for maintenance without a dedicated chain press tool. When installed correctly with the closed end of the clip facing the direction of chain travel, the clip-on link is a reliable choice for lower-horsepower applications or bikes where chain removal is a regular part of race prep.

Rivet Connecting Link
The rivet-style link is the preferred choice for high-horsepower drag bikes, including Pro Street and Grudge applications. Rather than relying on a clip, the side plate is pressed and peened permanently onto the link pins using a chain press tool, creating a connection that matches the integrity of the rest of the chain. The rivet-style master link is more secure than the clip version because it is held onto the chain via rivets instead of a clip, making it the go-to option when failure simply is not an option. Note that installation requires a chain press tool, and the link is not intended to be removed and reused.
