What is the Purpose of a Nitrous Bottle?
A nitrous bottle, also known as a nitrous oxide bottle or simply NOS bottle, is a container used to store nitrous oxide (N2O), commonly referred to as nitrous. The primary purpose of a nitrous bottle is to supply nitrous oxide to enhance the performance of an internal combustion engine.
Nitrous oxide is a colorless gas that, when injected into the engine’s intake manifold, can significantly increase the engine’s power output. It achieves this by acting as an oxidizer, supplying additional oxygen molecules to the combustion process. When nitrous oxide breaks down at high temperatures, it releases extra oxygen, allowing more fuel to be burned, resulting in increased horsepower and torque.
The nitrous bottle is filled with liquid nitrous oxide, which is stored under pressure. At room temperature, the pressure is typically around 900-1000 psi (pounds per square inch). A valve on the bottle controls the flow of nitrous oxide, allowing it to be released into the engine’s intake system when activated.
Nitrous oxide systems, commonly known as nitrous kits, consist of a nitrous bottle, a delivery system, and various safety devices. The delivery system includes solenoids, which regulate the flow of nitrous oxide, and nozzles or injectors, which introduce the nitrous oxide into the intake manifold. The safety devices ensure that the system operates within safe parameters and include features such as pressure relief valves and blow-off valves to prevent over-pressurization.
It’s important to note that the use of nitrous oxide in automotive applications requires careful tuning and monitoring to prevent engine damage. When used responsibly and within the manufacturer’s guidelines, nitrous oxide can temporarily boost performance for racing or high-performance applications.
